Complete Vocal Technique, CVT for short, is a modern vocal method that provides the vocalist with a concrete and pragmatic approach to using the voice. It teaches how we can produce all sounds, from classical singing to rough extreme vocal effects, in a healthy and sustainable way.

Developed by the Danish Cathrine Sadolin, CVT is the result of over 25 years of voice research, acknowledged by the international scientific community. In 2005 Sadolin founded Complete Vocal Institute in Copenhagen, a private institute that has grown to be the biggest community of singers and singing teachers in Europe.

Sing everything!

CVT can be applied to all styles of singing. It teaches techniques for both classical and contemporary styles, as well as how to sing healthy primal and extreme sounds used in rock and death metal. Providing a roadmap to versatile voice use, CVT helps both the vocalist that wants to excel in her/his signature style and the cross-over vocalist looking to master many styles of singing.

No stylistic bias

Putting the singer's authenticity and wishes first, CVT teachers are expected to refrain from using their taste unless the singer specifically requests for the teachers' artistic contribution. Therefore, the singer is free to choose their own developmental route, with the teacher providing the support and techniques to get there.

CVT provides concrete techniques to subjects such as:

  • Consistency and intonation
  • Singing with or without volume
  • Dynamic and pitch transitions
  • Avoiding "break" in the voice
  • Developing (extreme) range
  • Prevention and emergency aid for hoarse singers
  • Preventing constriction and tightness, vocal condition and stamina
  • Healthy extreme effects such as distortion, grunts, and growls

Complete Vocal Technique in short: the CVT Overview

CVT OverviewFirst, make sure to apply the
3 basic principles:

●  support
●  necessary twang
●  avoiding protruding the jaw or tightening of the lips

Then, you may choose a vocal mode:

1. Neutral
2. Curbing
3. Overdrive
4. Edge

After that, you can choose to change the sound color to match your artistic taste and preference.

Finally, perhaps choose the effect of your liking. At this point, it is important to have control of your sound color, vocal modes, and the 3 basic principles before you work with the effects.

Always make sure that:

  • Singing must always feel comfortable. Trust your sensations!
  • The applied technique must work as intended at once, otherwise, it's done incorrectly.
